‘It feels like the world is calling me’: International students cut through red tape to study

PCC faculty received a slight increase in salary after months of negotiations, there’s a new director at the Pride Center, and a this week saw third victory for the Lancers Men’s Soccer team! And in Lifestyle and Opinion, read all about life for international students at PCC and an opinion piece on the use of Hollywood actors to revive Broadway shows.
News
The PCC Board of Trustees approved an agreement last month that will increase the salary of all college faculty, full-time and part-time, by 1.07%. Negotiations began in March amidst an ongoing effort by the PCC Faculty Association to ensure fair pay for part-time faculty. The agreement is one step in the FA’s continued dialogue with the Pasadena Area Community College District. The board approved the agreement during the meeting on September 11 with no dissenting votes.

Opinion
No business was hit harder during the pandemic than live theater. Editor-in-Chief Laura Dux argues the reliance on Hollywood stars to save Broadway has ruined the quality of shows and diminished opportunity for lesser known actors in the industry.
“Small regional theaters cannot rely on casting celebrities to fill their subscriptions ( . . . ) If we lose regional theater, we lose the potential for upcoming talented unknown actors to ever hit the Broadway stage.”

Features
For Ana Bernal, the new director of the Pride Center, their ultimate focus is on student’s education and growth in the LGBTQ+ community and making the center a space for queer joy and safety. In their first week in the position, Bernal has wasted no time in setting up students for success, already establishing the agenda and providing resources for this year.

Sports
The Lancers collect their third consecutive clean sheet after scoring their most goals this season versus the College of the Canyons Cougars in a 4-0 victory last Tuesday evening. In both offense and defense, the Lancers dominated their competition. Their next game is on Tuesday, October 1, at 3:00 p.m. on the Allan Hancock Bulldogs’ home turf.
