The Courier Newsletter: Week of September 4th

At PCC’s newspaper The Courier at the beginning of the semester it is always a rush to get both new and returning staff writers and editors oriented with the rush of campus news, feature stories on the community, PCC sports, the world of opinions and the lifestyle of students. During this first week of publication, which occurs every Wednesday, The Courier reported on a number of different subjects from AI, free resources, campus sporting events, new movies, Twitter (now X) and opinions on the recent Republican debate, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and “the overhyped” hurriquake Hillary. Below will be a selection of the top stories from each section, featuring new writers and some returning faces to The Courier.

News

In news this week at PCC, we have an article by new Courier staffer Trina Jaconi-Biery who wrote about what PCC students who are enrolled in one or more credits can access with just their student ID.

Opinion

In the opinion section this week, returning Courier writer Sol Rodriguez wrote an article about the “overhyped” hurricane that barreled and sputtered out as it neared California towards the end of August. It just happened to be accompanied by an earthquake, giving it the now infamous name: “Hurriquake”

Features

As our features section goes through a transition and The Courier is working through editor challenges, we are sharing an article from Spring 2023 from a previous editor, Kamron Sheikhalmolooki who wrote a great feature on the time the Directors of “Everything Everywhere All At Once” visited and gave a lecture at PCC.

PCC Sports

In PCC Courier sports coverage, staff writer Lilliana Martirosyan wrote about PCC’s Women’s Volleyball team losing their opening home game. The Lancers began strong by winning their first set, but they slowly deflated both on the court and mentally as the sets marched on.

Lifestyle

The big question on many social media users minds was what happened with the steep cataclysmic rise and fall of Twitter’s (now X’s) biggest competitor Threads, from Meta? This story in Lifestyle from Managing Editor David Sosa, goes into detail on what PCC students had to say about threads and whether or not they feel there is a true comparison between X and Threads.

Podcast

For the first episode of Let’s Talk Season 2, hosts David and Sol are joined by new staff member Lucca to discuss the mental health struggles of higher education. Topics include students returning to college years later, high school stress and the need for a BA in today’s job market.
