The Courier Newsletter: Week of September 18th

It’s already week three of publishing at The Courier, and what a week it was, highlighted by The Courier’s first Editorial since 2019, a whole host of PCC sports games, filled with hat tricks, special moments and occasional disappointment, both for the reporters, fans and coaches. In news The Courier took a look at COVID-19 funding and it coming to a close, a new dual admissions program for incoming High School students and a new virtual exchange program for other community college students who want to remotely attend PCC. In opinion, we’ll be featuring a story from week one, as no one had any opinions this week, sadly. In features, The Courier covered an event focused on reclaiming natural spaces for the locally endangered Black Walnut. In lifestyle, this week there was everything from a story on farmers markets, video games, and the latest student opinions on music.

News

In this weeks news article, The Courier newsroom came together in their first editorial since 2019 and wrote about the lack of communication from PCC administration and the lack of economic assistance to purchase expensive textbooks. Penned both by Editor in Chief Samuel Valencia and The Courier Staff.

Opinion

From week one’s opinion section, new Courier staff writer, Carlos De La Luz wrote about the ongoing Hollywood SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, he emphasized the impact of technologies on worker demands compared to past union strikes, most recently in 2007-2008. And highlighted the fact that the studios will “starve out the workers” because they have the resources to do so.

Features

Finding herself back in the features section, new staff writer Trina Jaconi-Biery covered an event that took her into one of North East LA’s small pockets of nature. Highlighting the endangered Black Walnut tree, and it’s impacts on drawing the community into nature in LA’s dense neighborhoods to harvest the seeds, spread them and introduce the tree back into the environment.

PCC Sports

In PCC Courier sports coverage, staff writer Mitchel Gaby got lucky and covered the Lancer men’s soccer team and their wild comeback, which included a hat trick and other crowd rousing moments. In the end the Lancers stole the win after digging themselves an early hole.

Lifestyle

In this week’s lifestyle section, new staff writer Ayden Saeki wrote about local flea markets and farmers markets that students can visit after school, or on the weekends. The story also mentions all of the exciting things that can be purchased at these venues, from fun outfits to pickled onions!

Podcast

As we take a week off from the podcast due to scheduling snafu’s here’s an episode from Spring 2023 so your ears can have something in them on our week off. On a special episode of the podcast, David and Sol are joined by former opinion editor Kam to discuss cheating and their experiences. What exactly is cheating? Are there different forms of cheating?
