The Courier Newsletter: Week of October 30th

Welcome to week nine of the newsletter! This week at The Courier it was defined by the topic of the Podcast from last week: Burnout. It seeped into the entire room and the publication. This week there was nothing from the news section, two articles from opinion on Netflix’s price hikes, how Hollywood should stay away from parodying video games and how media has destroyed the attention spans of kids. In features, a writer covered the HBCU Caravan at PCC and highlighted one of the speakers at the event. In sports, our busiest section of the week covered nearly every PCC home game over the last week. In lifestyle a writer covered the challenges brewing in Hollywood over a rift in what different audiences and different generations want. For the remainder of our stories not featured for this week, visit pcccourier.com!
News
Because no news stories were published this week, we’re featuring a story from Assistant Social Media Editor Sabrina Farooq who explored the implications of new Diversity and Inclusion rules at PCC and other local community colleges and its First Amendment implications.
Opinion
In opinion staff writer Jagger Freedberg wrote about how Netflix cannot keep raising their prices, because at a certain point people will stop paying for such high prices for subscriptions, especially with the implementation of the new password sharing policies. Also, the lack of new content and the cancellation of some shows further erodes Netflix’s standing in the streaming world.
Features
In features Sports Editor Le’Raun Peron wrote about TV star and Harvard alumni Yara Shahidi’s visit to PCC for the HBCU Caravan event and a Courier exclusive interview with the actor. In the article he wrote about Shahidi’s acting in “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish” and other things about the film industry for people of color.
PCC Sports
In sports, staff writer Laura Dux wrote about the continued domination of PCC’s Women’s Volleyball team. In this particular match, she covered a special moment in Lancers history as one of the players (read the story for the underacted version) got awarded with a golden ball to commemorate her 500th kill with the team. (A term in volleyball that means the person scored the ball and the opponent had no chance for a return.)
Lifestyle
In lifestyle, staff writer Carlos De la Luz wrote about how Hollywood is having a hard time predicting what their audiences want to see. Much of it is attributed to the large differences in generational interest and what differing groups want to see on the big screen and what is worth going to a movie for.
Podcast
Listen to last weeks podcast that came out over the weekend, while the podcast is off this week:
With 8 weeks to go out of 16, are PCC students feeling burnout from their classes? Hosts David and Sol are joined by new staff writer Jagger to discuss their struggles balancing classes with other responsibilities. Topics include not showing up to class, never ending TikTok feeds, and what can be done to prevent procrastination.
