The Courier Newsletter: Week of October 16th

This week at The Courier there was a lot of added stress with Midterms this past week, but we published a whole host of stories from each of our sections. In news this week there was a story on a new wildland firefighting program PCC is set to debut in fall 2024, how the culture war is working itself into the California community college system and a story on students opinions about California’s recent sick pay laws. In opinion this week we published an article about how Kevin De León should get himself out of office, why directors cuts are not absolutely necessary and an opinion on why the fog of war takes away from what really needs to be focused on. In features this week there was a story about a building being renamed at PCC, the partial solar eclipse, and the earthquake drill that happens every year. In sports this week both the Men’s and the Women’s Soccer teams got coverage, whether the game was extremely sloppy or a ferocious beatdown. In lifestyle this week there was a story posted about five best horror movies to watch this year for Halloween, a review of the Era’s Tour on the big screen, and a story on Friday the 13th. On the podcast this week the conversation gets spooky while the hosts and their guest carve pumpkins, in this video exclusive edition. Below is the top stories from each section.
News
In news this week Assistant News Editor Ben Avraham wrote about the new career educational training center PCC is set to begin in fall 2024. The new training center will educate prospective students on becoming wildland firefighters. According to the report California is facing a major shortage of wildland firefighters as the climate gets hotter and deadly fires become more frequent.
Opinion
In Opinion this week Managing Editor David Sosa wrote about how Kevin de León is an embarrassment to positions of power, especially Latinos. From racist recordings in 2022 to ego driven power hungry moves while in office.
Features
In features this week, staff writer Laura Dux covered the renaming of PCC’s C building to the Jack Scott building. Jack Scott was PCC’s Superintendent-President from 1987-1995, and has served at various positions in the California State Legislator. He now serves as one of the Board of Directors at PCC’s Foundation.
PCC Sports
In sports this week, staff writer Samuel Watson wrote about the Women’s soccer team and their brutalization of Compton in a 5-0 blowout win. The game featured almost complete domination from the Lancers, who kept it on “full throttle” the whole game.
Lifestyle
In lifestyle this week staff writer Carlos De La Luz wrote about his picks for the top five Halloween horror movies, with some that will make you cower in fear, scream very loudly, or laugh in unrelenting fits of Halloween glee. This list comprises of both older and a few newer movies, but no matter what check out this story to get your horror fix for this year while chomping on candy.
