The Courier Newsletter: Week of November 13th

Welcome to week eleven of the PCC Courier newsletter. The newsroom stayed busy this week as we head into the final dog days of the semester and our final few weeks of publication for 2023. This week we also ask that you leave some feedback on this newsletter so we can work on continuing to improve this product as we finish our inaugural semester of the newsletter, the Google Form can be found: Here. Now back to our usual programming. In news this week we have one story about the recent union election results at PCC, a dive into professor mental health and a analysis of campus free speech at various institutions among this heated political climate. In opinion, there was a story on social media anonymity, a criticism of Biden’s Palestine policies and a story on movie media critiques. In features there was a single story written about the recent news that Trustee John Martin is set to retire in 2024. In lifestyle there was several stories ranging from PCC aesthetics, to a Travis Scott concert, Camp Flog Gnaw and a story about the Roman Empire on social media. Below are the top stories for this week, but check out our other stories here: pcccourier.com
News
In news, News Editor Seamus Bozeman and Assistant Video Editor Sabrina Farooq dove into the issues of faculty mental health, as the focus has nearly entirely been on students and student resources. Especially as professors are expected to take more on and become “quasi first responders” to students mental health needs in classes and after classes. Respond to this form here, if you are a professor and would be willing to talk about your experience with this issue.
Opinion
In opinion, this week Editor in Chief Samuel Valencia wrote about how CinemaSins has essentially bred the worst kinds of armchair film critics on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), and Letterboxd. These platforms have also been to blame for the death of true film critiques that get paid well, and instead the rise of mob mentality and the burgeoning “douche” culture of anonymous platforms like social media.
Features
In features, News Editor Seamus Bozeman wrote a wide ranging article on Trustee John Martin’s sprawling legacy at PCC over the last 44 years, after he announced his retirement from the Board in October. It has voices from nearly the entire board and the interim superintendent-president.
PCC Sports
With no sports to cover from this past week, we are featuring a story from last week, as staff writer Venessa Villegas wrote about a redemption game for PCC’s Volleyball team as they march their way towards the playoffs. Their first playoff game is this upcoming weekend in the SoCal regional playoffs.
Lifestyle
In lifestyle, Sport Editor Le’raun Peron wrote about his “sensational weekend” at Camp Flog Gnaw and the amount of talent that took the stage at the event. The highlights included an appearance by Ice Spice, Tyler, The Creator and Kendrick Lamar, just to name a few. Also, Tyler, The Creator literally came out flaming to preform his set, with a flamethrower mounted on his back and firing as he walked out.
Podcast
Joined again by Machu, hosts David and Sol discuss what its like preparing for college applications. Is it worth getting a Bachelor’s nowadays, or is it more beneficial to immediately get a job? Topics include applying during high school, balancing multiple jobs, and moving out.
