The Courier Newsletter: Week of March 4th

Welcome to week two of the spring 2024 newsletter, some of our newsroom is spending their weekend at the California statewide Journalism Association of Community College conference in La Jolla where they will spend it going to various keynote speakers, workshops, lectures, on-the-spot competitions and at the end of weekend an awards ceremony. (Which we will update you all on next week.) Have fun and good luck to those competing in competitions!

The Courier also dipped its feet into local Pasadena coverage this week when they wrote a story on accusations that a local candidate in the Pasadena City Council elections had violated voters' privacy. Back at PCC, news covered the latest in the presidential search and the Management Associations efforts to unionize at the college. In the opinion section, there were several interesting stories from our writers, from opinions on studios and their treatment of animators, to how old people think young people are lazy. In features, we covered a few on-campus events, a story from PCC’s men’s basketball team, a new housing program and a local lucha libre event. In lifestyle and sports there’s too many to list here, but go check out those and our other stories at pcccourier.com

News

Opinion

In opinion, new staff writer Monet Ayala wrote about how older generations perceive younger generations as ‘lazy’ because they “don’t want to work.” But, clearly the data shows that it really can be attributed, at least mostly, to the higher cost of living and other costs associated with life nowadays, and no they are lazy.

Features

In features, new staff writer Alexandra Ruiz wrote about PCC’s end of Black History Month event at the school, from its lively atmosphere and a visit from the grand nephew of Jackie Robinson. It also features the PCC UJIMA program and what it brings to the community.

PCC Sports

In sports, Sports Editor Le’Raun Peron wrote a feature on two players from the Men’s Lancers Basketball team, Myles Watkins and Deen Abdur-Rahmann who got selected to the All-South Coast Conference Team. The All-South Coast Conference team is essentially for the best of the best of Southern California community college sports players.
