The Courier Newsletter: Week of March 25th

Welcome to week five of the Courier newsletter, this week the Courier had a slow week, only a handful of stories from each section, but we’re still here! Despite the lives of our writers that take place outside of this place, we’re going to be here to cover PCC from on-campus news, the latest events, sportsball, the podcast returning and much more.
In News, we had a single story that took three weeks of interviews, document analysis and researching to produce a deep dive into the PCC’s foundation’s investment portfolio’s which has now become the target of two on-campus clubs. In Opinion, we talked about TikTok, and the Royal Family. In Features, we wrote about a book pop-up at PCC, a story on Ramadan and its significance during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, a keynote speech from an author and a video-game based classical performance. In Sports, we covered a single game from Lancers softball on their continued struggles this year. In Lifestyle, we talked to PCC students about dating apps, March Madness, music and why the Ghostbusters should be put in a deep freeze. Read all of these and more on our website pcccourier.com
Have a great week folks, we will see you next time. Its always great to hear from you on your thoughts about the newsletter, so leave them here as we begin a transition to new newsletter writers. Fill out the form, here.
News
In News, News Editors Seamus Bozeman and Sabrina Farooq and Staff Writer Colin Haskins wrote an article that analyzed PCC’s and their foundations investments into several industries that profit off of war and climate degradation. They also wrote about the investment policies of the foundation and how two PCC clubs are tackling efforts to get the college to divest from these industries.
Opinion
In Opinion, Editor-in-chief Samuel Valencia wrote about the issues that have arisen since the U.S. House passed a complete TikTok ban, unless the company was sold to a U.S. based entity. He argues that, like the headline says, TikTok’s ban is a sham, and has deep roots, not in the interest of data privacy, but in racism and xenophobic intentions.
Features
In Features, Editor-in-chief Samuel Valencia and Social Media/Video Editor Dante Estrada wrote and produced a video story of a concert that instead of listening to the 8-bit music of a video game, an orchestra played the soundtrack instead. Check out the video and story below.
PCC Sports
In Sports, Staff Writer Mercedes Rodriguez wrote about the latest woes on the Lancers softball team. The team had been winless through several games, including this one. However, their confidence has risen, and have won a game since last week. (Not the one we covered.)
Lifestyle
In Lifestyle, Staff Writer Zach Kilgore, wrote about how March Madness has historically been a men’s centric event, but that is finally starting to change. This shift comes as viewership increases, and several amazing players begin to break out onto the scene. Read the full story below.
Podcast
Separating art from the artist: Is it possible? Assistant News Editor Sabrina joins host David to unpack what the phrase means today. Topics include canceling artists who have passed away, Kanye West, and whether separation is an absolute or an attitude. See both the audio and video versions below. Also, our special guest podcast will come out sometime next week. Stay tuned…
