The Courier Newsletter: Week of March 18th

Welcome to week 4 of the Courier newsletter, where the newsroom is humming along, staying busy covering campus events, from the most interesting scoops to the mundane news, the opinions of our writers (and a once in a blue moon Editorial), features of on campus events and the best to the worst on the latest trends, video games and media content.
In this weeks articles fresh off the digital presses, news covered the passage of a ceasefire resolution in Pasadena, a new program that pays system impacted students to attend college, and a former dean filing a damages claim against the college. In opinion, we have opinions on TikTok’s book craze, Waymo’s unfortunate calamity, comic book criticism, football commentary and an editorial asking L.A. to reconsider the idea of holding the 2028 olympics here. In features, we covered a dance held by PCC’s Puente Club and a feature on a new art installation in PCC’s gallery. In sports, we covered one game this week, as we continue to write about the rough season for PCC’s softball team. News
In News, News Editor Seamus Bozeman and new staff writer Colin Haskins wrote about a damages claim that was filed against PCC in mid-February by the former kinesiology dean that was terminated in August 2023. The board rejected the claim at their March 20 meeting in closed session. Read the details of the claim against PCC in the story below.
Opinion
In Opinion, the Courier staff and editorial team came together to write about how unequipped Los Angeles is for hosting the Olympics in 2028. From no real plan to deal with the homelessness crisis, to lagging transportation issues feeds into the many reasons LA clearly won’t be ready for 2028. Read the full article below.
Features
In Features Assistant Lifestyle Editor Odessa Hairapetian wrote about PCC’s recent Queerchata event held by the Puente Club and other groups on campus, where student learned to dance, have fun and express themselves to be “carefree of any gender norms that interfered with the expression of dance.”
PCC Sports
In Sports, new staff writer Colin Haskins wrote about the continued struggles of PCC’s softball team and their continued losing streak. However, this game was a bit better than most of their recent games, after keeping it close the whole game. The team had been through several games to start the year where they had to end early due to the score and the mercy rule. Read on their improvements and tweaks in the story.
Lifestyle
In Lifestyle, new staff writer Alexandra Ruiz wrote about parasocial relationships, which are essentially imaginary friends or imagined relationships with celebrities. This story goes over the deeper meaning of parasocial friendships and what PCC students had to say on the issue. Read, and see if you have any of these relationships yourself.
