The Courier Newsletter: Week of March 11th

Welcome to week 3 of the Courier Newsletter for spring 2024. Over the weekend, as mentioned last week some editors and staff writers from The Courier went to the Journalism Association of Community Colleges state conference in La Jolla and won 24 awards, which included entries from the newspaper in fall 2023, on-the-spot competitions and our magazine from spring 2023. Congrats all.

Beyond the continued successes of the publication, we had another busy week producing stories from each of our sections. In news, we covered the recent trustee elections and continued controversy at the Academic Senate concerning bad behavior, issues about not publicizing their meetings over YouTube and other complaints. In opinion, our writers wrote about the Dodgers and their upcoming season after an insane offseason, a counter argument asking the Dodgers to “win” in the playoffs and various others. In features from the first of the semester we wrote about what is coming up this semester from PCC theater department. In sports, The Courier wrote about PCC’s softball team and their most recent lopsided loss. In lifestyle, we got a list of PCC’s collection of favorite books, an assortment of reviews and a dive into LA’s graffitied towers. Check out all of this on our website at pcccourier.com !

Silver, did not face an opponent in her election. James Aragon, the presumptive winner in Area 2 has not officially announced his win. The incoming Trustees will be sworn in at some point in early April, an official date will be announced shortly.

Opinion

In Opinion, new staff writer Michael Macchia argued that the 2024 Dodgers have never been better positioned to win a World Series, just because of all the talent on the roster. He went on to say that “These are a bunch of superstars that are ready to win a championship now. If Los Angeles hoists that trophy in November of 2024, people may look at this squad and say that the 2024 Dodgers was the greatest Dodger team of all time.”

Features

In features this week, we feature a story from a couple weeks ago from new staff writer and social media team member Nahomy Nunez-Galeano who wrote about PCC’s students and their recent auditioning for the latest play on campus. It also looks into what is coming up for PCC’s theater department. Read the story below.

PCC Sports

In Sports, staff writer Samantha Ortiz returns to sports to write about the PCC women’s Softball team and their continued struggles against Long Beach, where they lost 9-1 in 5-innings after the mercy rule was called for the second time this season.

Lifestyle

In Lifestyle, Assistant Lifestyle Editor Odessa Hairapetian wrote about the recent controversy over the “graffiti towers” in downtown Los Angeles, but the article argues that this is just an opportunity to show off the cultural identity, and the rich and storied history of LA. The story also notes some of the criticism stems from the fact that graffiti is often associated with gangs.

The podcast returns with video for the first time this year:
