The Courier newsletter in its usual story promotion format is back for spring 2024! With a full room of new writers, returning staffers and editors we look forward to covering PCC from the latest fashion trends, to the latest scoop in on-campus news, the most interesting events, PCC sports games and the opinions of our writers.
In this week’s edition of the newsletter we cover PCC’s record enrollment, boycott’s over the Israel-Hamas war, another retiring Board Member, a loss in softball, an article questioning the future of physical and a podcast episode on the behind the scenes of the voter guide and a conversation on the importance of civic engagement. Several other stories published this week are available at pcccourier.com !
We’ve also included a Google form for professors to fill out regarding a story The Courier is working on. Access the form Here. Your response would be greatly appreciated.
News
In News, returning writer and newly appointed Assistant Lifestyle Editor Odessa Hairapetian wrote about PCC’s record enrollment and what it means for the institution from a fiscal standpoint, what it means moving forward and a clear return to a pre-covid era. It is also the first time PCC had a winter intersession since early 2021.
Opinion
In Opinion, new staff writer Colin Haskins wrote about how quote on quote boycott fatigue comes from a place of privilege and carelessness for the wider movement. Especially when “85% of Gaza’s population is displaced” and they are relying on the outside world to end their suffering, or being complicit in letting it continue.
Features
In Features, News Editor Seamus Bozeman profiled Jim Osterling who is set to retire after the March Board of Trustees meeting after making the decision to not run for re-election. He joins John Martin, who also is set to retire in the coming weeks. Osterling describes his time at PCC as just being a small piece of the puzzle in making this "wonderful” institution run, emphasizing the amazing work faculty and others do to make PCC the most valuable asset in the San Gabriel Valley.
PCC Sports
In Sports, new staff writer Samantha Ortiz covered the Women’s Softball team in their close 10-9 loss to El Camino. Their loss was sealed by two costly errors where El Camino later scored in the same inning.
Lifestyle
In Lifestyle, Lifestyle Editor, Ayden Saeki questioned the future of physical media as society becomes more and more attached to our phones, computers and other devices — many coming without DVD and CD players, spelling an end to an era of old technology.
Podcast
On the first episode back from winter break, host David Sosa is joined by News Editor Seamus to discuss civic engagement, local elections and a project that The Courier worked on with local newspaper LAist to inform local voters about who’s running in the election on March 5. Races covered include the Pasadena Mayor, Pasadena City Council and Pasadena City College Board of Trustees.
