The Courier Newsletter: Week of December 4th

The semester is almost over for The Courier, and the stories are pouring in, everything from in-depth news stories, to interesting opinions, feature stories on campus issues, an empty sports section and a couple reviews in our lifestyle section. Despite the busy week The Courier received some incredibly sad news over the last weekend that we had lost former Courier Photo Editor and PCC Sports photographer Micheal Watkins. The Courier wrote an obituary and put together a photo gallery of Watkins work that is included below in features and the sports section of the newsletter.

The remainder of the stories not featured below can be found as usual at pcccourier.com

News

In News, News Editor Seamus Bozeman, Assistant Social Media Editor Sabrina Farooq and Staff Writer Mitchel Gaby collaborated on an article about PCC’s first housing complex that was approved for the next five years starting in 2024, at the November Board meeting. The housing complex is set to be used for PCC’s foster youth program. Foster youth face some of the highest rates of housing insecurity and homelessness among community college students.

Opinion

In Opinion, staff writer Odessa Hairapetian wrote about how Disney’s recent incidences of suicide and other security incidents has eroded some of the magic that Disney and their parks once brought to kids and adults alike. And, the story includes details and thoughts on the accusation that Disney may have had several more of these incidents than guests are privy to.

Features

In Features, Lifestyle Editor Sol Rodriguez and Editor-in-Chief Samuel Valencia wrote an obituary for Michael Watkins, who passed away last weekend. He was instrumental to The Courier for several semesters as a photo editor and most recently was a photographer at PCC for the sports department, taking photos of nearly every single game. “On behalf of everyone from not just the Courier staff but PCC as an institution, we hope Michael rests easy and he will forever be honored on campus.”

PCC Sports

This week in sports, in honor of Michael Watkins and his legacy at PCC, we will be sharing a gallery of his work at The Courier compiled by Courier Photo Advisor Tim Berger and others.

Lifestyle

In Lifestyle, Staff Writer Laura Dux wrote a review on Netflix’s anime adaptation of “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” calling it “possibly the boldest and smartest move any adaptation has ever done.” But the review does touch on some of the negative aspects of the series and the several adaptations that this has gone through,. However the conclusion was that the storyline was good enough to watch a second episode, but it was the playfulness of the characters that kept the show binge-worthy.

Podcast

After PCC took away the $200 textbook waiver previously offered to all students, hosts David and Sol, alongside editor-in-chief Samuel, discuss what it was like writing The Courier’s editorial. Additionally they go over the semester’s best stories.
