This is Lifestyle Editor Maryam Tall here to share with you everything that has been going on this week!
This week PCC celebrated their first generation students in a plethora of events called First Gen Week, Larry Spotted Crow Mann, a Nipmuc tribal educator, shares the stories of his tribe, and for the first time in decades, the Lancers football team ends their regular season unbeaten. Read about the Courier’s interview with PCC’s writer-in-residence, journalist and author Lynell George, as well as an opinion piece about the NFL and keeping fascism out of sports.

Opinion
The NFL is not unfamiliar with being in the center of national news and political discourse, especially with the conduct of its players being considered disrespectful or even fascist. Sports Editor Jovanni Alvarado argues that fascism has no place in sports at all, but also how the NFL and its players need to be held accountable for blackballing certain players like Colin Kapernick, while allowing others to commit worse decisions with no consequences.

PCC’s writer in residence, Lynell George, author of “A Handful of Earth, A Handful of Sky: The World of Octavia Butler”, sits down with the Courier’s Features editing team to talk about her journalism career, her journey in Butler’s archives, and how in an age of misinformation, a reader’s trust is a value she holds dear. George talks about her connection to Butler, and how the work she does has altered her perspective on the landscape of journalism.

Sports
What once seemed impossible, has now been made possible, as the Lancers football team ended the 50 year drought of having an unbeatable regular season as they carried a 46-6 beatdown on Saturday. The defensive work from the team reflected highly in the outcome of the game. The Lancers will have a week of rest, before bowl week, as their season comes to a close.

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, PCC hosted Larry Spotted Crow Mann, a Nipmuc tribal educator, and author of the book “Drumming and Dreaming” to share the stories of his tribe that were unable to be passed down. Mann talks about the importance of knowing his culture, and sharing it so it doesn’t disappear and instead leaves a legacy of healing through storytelling.
